Twinning Program

The Verte is the official environment club of St. Joseph’s School. It promotes the importance for sustainable development for the future generations and makes the students and staff aware of the environmental issues faced during present times.

This is done through various forms of activities and educational programs organized by the club in the school. The club also participates in different eco-campaigns and also works alongside many environmental organizations.

One of the major projects of the club was the release of the movie “2100 Revival” talking about the consequences of our actions towards the environment and its aftermath.

Roots and Shoot

Roots and Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall institute, is a global movement of youth who are empowered to use their voice and actions to make compassionate decisions and lead change in their communities. It was founded in 1991 when Dr. Jane Goodall started to give talks at local schools in Tanzania.

A group of 12 students met with her at her home to discuss their local environmental concerns and figure what they could do. The name Roots and Shoots is symbolic. Every tree begins its life as a small seedling which grows to be so strong that its roots can break through the dense soil.

Twinning Programme:

Under the roots and shoots, the twinning programme was introduced, through which schools in UAE and UK would be paired, thus providing the students with the opportunity to have a direct insight of the other group’s homeland, environment, wildlife, culture, religion and languages. The schools will be able to interact with each other using tools such as emails and video conferencing so as to have a personalized look at their partner school and its students and activities. This programme has its many benefits; it not only allows students to learn about another culture but also to intermingle and work with different nationalities. And now, even our school is able to avail these benefits as they are also part of this programme.

SJS GROUP

On behalf of St. Josephs school, The team who will be taking part in the twinning programme has been formed by 20 students of Grade 10, who have actively and enthusiastically volunteered to collaborate and bring forth innovative and creative ideas, to save our world out there, putting up suggestions and changes that they can make.

The team members are: Aishwarya, Angela, Ankita, Anugraha , Ariana, Arya, Christina, Jessica, Kezia, Lana, Michelle, Nadiya, Nicole, Paloma, Rose, Sneha Shaji , Sneha Sojan, Thusha and Varsha, who under the guidance of our dear Principal and leadership of our beloved Tr vani , as a guarding light without which it wouldn’t have been a success.

TASIS

As part of this twinning programme, our school has been privileged to be paired with TASIS The American School in Switzerland. This school was established in 1956, and as of now, educates students from around 60 countries, speaking about 35 languages as a mother tongue. It has a curriculum which is rich and varied and provides a wide range of facilities so as to develop their students and equip them for the future challenges. As the coordinator of the student group from this school, we have Miss Wendy Gediman, who has made a name in the field of environmental conservation.

A GLIMPSE

Barney Swan, son of Robert Swan , is the co-founder of the global non-profit 2041 Climateforce established in 2018. The 2041 Climateforce engages and formulates solutions and steps towards sustainability. Barney Swan has undertaken a mission to combat climate change.

In 2017, Swan established the ClimateForce challenge, which aims to clean up 360 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere before 2025. He aims to do that by providing individuals and businesses with solutions to reduce energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions. Swan is also currently working with Climeworks, a green energy development company, to produce infrastructure that filters carbon dioxide out of the air.

As part of the twinning programme and under the encouragement of Miss Wendy, our SJS group was fortunate enough to express their ideas on sustainability with regard to the Climateforce and are considering future prospects of working with this organization.

Twinning Program Sustainability Write Up

Sustainability is the proactive usage of resources and it involves shifting our focus to the basic necessities of the future rather than being preoccupied with our own lavish needs. In my perspective, sustainability is just a dream of the best future for some, while only a few others are aware that it will turn into reality with just the simplest moves we take every day. Each one of us has a role to play, we matter and it makes all the difference.
“Aishwarya Ramesh”

According to me, sustainability is not a simple act, it should be a life-long habit and behavior. Preaching about sustainability proves useless if one does not practice it. Sustainable development is born out of sustainable practices in one's life. It is preserving for the future generations without hindering the needs of the present generation.
“Angela Ajith George”

In my opinion, sustainability is a lost art wherein existing resources are managed and organized well to allow its utilization even many years into the future. It's human nature to ignore a problem till it affects us personally. But here, we should try to understand the gravity of the problem of depleting resources. Every individual can do his bit towards sustainability - even the smallest of changes like following the 3 Rs is a step in the right direction.
“Ankita Rajan”

“We do not inherit our Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children” Sustainability refers to the co-existence of the human world along with the biosphere. Sustainability throws light on how the imprudent decisions of mankind in the past have made such adverse effects on nature. Through ‘sustainability’ man hopes to develop the future without undermining the resources of the coming generations. Sustainability is not a word or a thought rather it should be a habit on which we lead our lives. Let us act in the present, thinking about the future.
“Anugraha Varghese”

Sustainability focuses on keeping up to the needs of the present without hindering the ability of future generations to keep up to theirs. I personally consider that companies could play a great role in promoting the practice of sustainability. Increasingly, companies have issued sustainability goals such as commitment to zero-waste packaging by a certain year, or to reduce overall emissions by a certain percentage. Some electricity companies, for example, now publicly state goals for energy generation from sustainable sources such as wind, hydropower, and solar.
The biggest movement related to the social development side of sustainability, has been programs such as Fair Trade and the Rainforest Alliance in encouraging good farming practices while ensuring farmers who produce luxury goods such as coffee and cocoa receive a decent living wage. I think that we are all doing our best to keep up to the sustainability of our present and future with zero compromises and we are definitely on the right track to a great future.
“Ariana D’Souza”

Sustainability is the ability to exist constantly. In the 21st century, it refers generally to the capacity for the biosphere and human civilization to coexist. In these modern times, sustainability is a topic which should be discussed comprehensively. It should become an essential feature when talking about new technology. Sustainability should become a regular household word when it comes to technology and new creations. If not, there is a chance that resources will be depleted rapidly and without any check. This could lead to deterioration in the environment and overuse of natural resources, both of which are not good for the Earth or its inhabitants in the long run.
“Arya James”

Sustainability is preserving the resources available to us for our future generations. Sustainable development is the progress taking place without causing damage to these resources. We can do so by avoiding misuse and taking certain steps to ensure their maintenance.
“Jessica Chandy”

My thought on sustainability is the usage of renewable substances to sustain life on earth. Steps taken by different environmental institutions in using alternate methods has decreased the pollution level. Also, the lockdown has benefited the environment in various ways like the healing of the ozone layer. But I believe today the major problem we face is plastic, in the beginning I considered plastic as an easily solvable problem but after I watched the movie ‘STORY OF PLASTIC’ I was shocked to see the amount of plastic present in this world. It would be great if measures are taken to lower or stop the production of plastic, and reuse the waste plastic for manufacturing substances.
“Kezia Bobby”

‘Sustainability’ is much more than a recent buzzword. While the use of the word has certainly increased in frequency, the concept itself is hardly new! Sustainability is important for a very simple, very straightforward reason: we cannot maintain our quality of life as human beings, the diversity of life on Earth, or Earth’s ecosystems unless we embrace it. There are indications from all quarters and from the smallest to the largest scale that sustainability is something we must address. We will run out of fossil fuels. Thousands if not millions of animal species will become extinct. We will damage the atmosphere beyond repair, if we do not change. The root of that change lies in understanding and starving for sustainability in our own homes, in our communities, in our ecosystems, and around the world.
“Michelle Moras”

A simple definition of sustainability is to maintain our needs and resources without compromising the needs of the future generations. But why should we care about sustainability? It can improve health, increase safety and save money! In the end, we must accept the fact that the environment we live in provides us so much that it is our responsibility to also conserve it.
“Nadiya Nijas”

If you google 'sustainability', you'll get 'development without harming the environment', 'minimizing the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance', 'meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future generations'...
We'll leave it to the scientists and researchers to find alternate and better resources but there's still a lot WE can do to ensure sustainability: follow the 3R's, use your cycle more often, compost kitchen waste, grow your own garden, donate, reduce your electricity and water usage, take part in campaigns and join clubs that promote sustainability. After all, "What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make" - Jane Goodall
“Paloma D'Souza”

To me, sustainability means moving towards the future without ruining it as well as constructively dealing with the existing damages in nature.
I am of the opinion that whatever measures that various global institutions and organizations may suggest, sustainability can be brought about only if each individual has the courage and the will to make a change in their lifestyle for the better and take this mission as a responsibility and an obligation.
“Rose Pius”

Sustainability can be defined as the actions through which humans avoid the depletion of natural resources to keep an ecological balance. Humans should be able to satisfy their current needs without compromising the ability of future generations doing the same.
“Sneha Shaji”

Sustainability is the judicious use of resources to satisfy our needs keeping in mind that we do not own these resources rather we have to pass them for the use of the coming generations.
In order to incorporate sustainable practices in the lives of the people, they first need to be educated on what is sustainable and its importance. If possible, it should be brought to the government's notice that sustainable development is a need of the hour due to which the governments should pressurize the people to incorporate sustainable practices.
“Sneha Sojan”

Sustainability in simple words is to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

There are many ways in which we at home can promote sustainability:
Save water
  • Turn off taps when not in use and make sure there is no leakage in pipes.
  • Take bucket baths rather than using showers as it can save a huge amount of water.
  • Use washing machines only for full loads.
Save electricity
  • Switch off lights and other electrical appliances when not in use.
  • Reduce the overuse of electricity.
  • Walk or use bicycles for travelling short distances rather than using cars.
  • We need to promote the need for sustainability to everyone around us because only if we work together, we can create a better world for future generations.
